Chief Electoral Officer Naresh Gupta has instructed District Election Officers to complete in a week, the process of securing forms from prospective voters identified through 100 per cent field verification.

Pointing out that the field verification began in November last, Mr. Gupta told reporters that booth-level officers had adopted a pro-active approach in the verification process and identified 46.16 lakh cases for inclusion. Of this, the relevant forms from 32.74 lakh cases had been obtained.

Of 16.82 lakh cases identified as surplus voters, deletion notices were served in 12.35 lakh cases.

Also, out of 8.9 lakh cases for correction of entries, forms were secured from 5.64 lakh cases.

The DEOs were advised to get back the forms with documentary evidence for age/residence and photographs by May 25. Once electoral rolls were updated on the basis of the field verification, the Public (Elections) Department would take up the summary revision of the rolls in July with January 1, 2010 as the qualifying date.

Disclosing that he had been made the observer for the biennial elections to the Rajya Sabha slated for June 17, Mr. Gupta said Assembly Secretary [M. Selvaraj] would be the returning officer.

Asked about the issue over the appointment of Officer on Special Duty in connection with the formation of Legislative Council, he said the position had been clarified.

While the OSD would look after matters such as accommodation arrangements for the Council, the Election Commission, through the Public (Elections) Department, would be in-charge of delimitation of constituencies for the Council and conduct of polls.
