In a strange ritual, more than 2,000 women including school-going teen-aged girls, who were believed to be ‘possessed’ by evil spirits were given vicious whip lashes to “free them from these bad elements” at the annual festival of the ancient Sri Achappan Temple at Bavithram Vellalapatti, a remote village situated on the border of Tiruchi and Namakkal districts, on Monday, the Vijayadasami Day.
The men priests, dressed in traditional attire, cracked whips on the ‘possessed’ women, the salvation seekers, who sat in a half-kilometre-long queue for nearly five hours on a sprawling open space called ‘lashing ground’ near the temple.
Many of them were young school and college-going girls, who winced when they received the lashes and writhed in pain on the ground. The long and wieldy whips, which descended on them in full ferocity, had left them gasping for breath, causing burning marks of wounds on them and forcing them to sob and cry in searing pain. Many were given three to four flogs to drive away the ‘multiple spirits’ that possessed them.
Vanita, a twelfth standard student from a nearby village, who received the lash, was holding both her hands in pain. Sobbing uncontrollably, she told The Hindu that she had to sit on the queue as her parents insisted. As she was not showing interest in studies, they believed that an evil spirit had possessed her, preventing her from scoring high marks. "They forced me. Now my friends will look at me suspiciously once they know that I attended the festival, known for curing mental disorders,” she said.
Vanita was not the only girl student to be flogged against her wishes and to face taboo back at home. Many of her age and even those younger, in the age group of 11 and 12 and studying, had undergone the ordeal to drive away the presumed extraterrestrials that did not permit them to study well.
Another girl, about 16, from a village in Dindigul district was brought to the 'lashing ground’ as she was yet to attain puberty and another for her irregular menstrual periods. Even a newly wed wife, accompanied by her husband, attended it saying that her in-laws had told her that she was 'possessed.’
“A lash here will cure all these ills, physical and mental, that afflict women,” said a 60-year old Chelli, a regular receiver of lashes in the temple for the past decade. Her hands bore criss-cross marks of scars from wounds she received from the whips.
Asked if the practice was not a crime, the temple priest and co-ordinator, Kulla Goundan, of Kurumbar descent, said it was not so. “It is a belief of devotees and the practice is in vogue for long. We cannot alter [that],” he said. Nearly 10,000 people gathered for the festival, which concluded on Tuesday.

There's a man in that line of bent over women. Selective reporting?
And how do they have cops guarding stuff like this ?
Superstitions at their height
Quite a commentary on the state of India, beneath the veneer of progress and technology, lies an outdated, cruel, sexist and ignorant society.
How can something like this happen in 21st century India. This is horrible brutality against young women and teenage girls. These so-called priests should be prosecuted for their actions. What are the governments of Tamil Nadu and India doing to stop something like this?.
It is high time the government sensitised the police and the public on what cruelty is. Doesn't this need to be part of the regular police training?
This is inhumane, cruel and more than anything else, stupid. India for all its improvements is still mired in superstition, sexism and corruption.
Utter nonsense. Everyone including the policemen standing there, should be sentenced.
This is atrocious and barbaric act. Why women alone as if the evil spirit will not be with men. This kind of act should be condemned and Human Rights Act should be invoked.
I think courts need take action suo motu action and see that in future years these acts are not committed. I think very clearly there is a pattern of coercion from parents on their kids here. I can believe if adults take up this voluntarily, but kids under age of 18 need not be subjected to these inhumane acts.
Seriously these kind of events do happen all over India and we as a citizen never bother unless we get affected. Can we move a petition on this?
This is disgusting and violates human rights. Torture in the name of convention. Sati was part of convention. Please some one, take action.
I think the cops standing there must be getting the whipping! Government must introduce proper mental health care services. Lack of knowledge is the reason for this inhuman crime.
This happening for decades of parties ruling Tamil Nadu based on "self-respect and rational thinking" ideology. It would a great investigation to find out who is gaining from such events.
What a cruel ordeal for these poor victims. It reflects the cruel nature of Indian thought not covered in other English media. Although I feel pained to see this news item, I congratulate The Hindu for reporting this.
It is a shame that the Government is shutting its eyes. Shame that the policemen are watching. Why can't India wake up and educate these ignorant and innocent people. Will the people enforcing this be arrested?
These things will continue to happen till literacy reaches them. Politicians will continue to keep these people in the dark, allowing these rituals, so they can buy their votes for a lower sum. The Tamil Nadu government is busy magnanimously releasing killers, terrorists and convicts on the leaders' birthdays. So they won't have the time to look into these things. What is the Human Rights Commission doing? No wonder western countries still think snake-charming India is the real India.
This really shows that Indian democracy is tolerant towards Hindu, Muslim massacres/Maoist insurgency/gang rapes/human sacrifices and now this" therapy for mental illness/poor school grades" besides persistent farmer suicides. It is a real shame. Thanks for publishing and educating us all. I can see three khaki-clad policemen.
It's shameful to have such a custom in Tamil Nadu where a social reformer like Periyar was born. Just copying Vivek's words from a movie, "Even if 1000 Periyars come, these people cannot be changed." Wish the people change and real empowerment of women happens.
Hello Honorable Chief Minister and his cabinet and Supreme Court Justices please wake up. In India there was sati years ago, during British rule, and it was put to stop. India is vastly improved. These priests should be prosecuted and sent to jail.
There is a policeman watching, as always. Not surprising, though.
Look at that idiotic cop staying agape !
I may be mistaken, but the expression of the policeman standing in the background suggests that he is amused by what is going on. Those who are expected to protect individuals from violence instead prefer to remain mute spectators. Not only the priests, but the parents who forced their girls to undergo such trauma need to be prosecuted.
And the Government is saying India will be a developed nation in the near future. How ? With these kind of sick-minded people
I can't believe police is a bystander in this picture!
All this in the name of God? The temple priest and his supporters should be sentenced for brutality. What a disgusting superstition. Imagine if this kind of physical abuse can happen so openly in a society, what kind of brutality and abuse must be happening behind closed doors? Is there any sensible politician in India who can bring an end to all these practices?
The instances reflect that India, not just TN, needs an E V Ramasami today.
No civilised society can tolerate this.
Many are unaware that many mental disorders are not spiritual and they are organic in nature like heart problem, sugar, B.P. etc., which are treatable with medication. In Indian society, mental disorders are considered as below one's dignity. It is also thought that this disease is western in nature and will not affect Indians believing in God. This is wrong.
Social organisations should work with the people here to educate them of the evil they are indulging in. They don't seem to be bad people, but good people with bad senses. Government should facilitate the social organisations.
So called priests, parents, police and spectators are all evil themselves who are standing there and watch these helpless girls, women being bashed up. It is not human, it is not legal, there is nothing religious about it - this is torture and this practice must be abolished immediately by the local authorities and these culprits brought to justice.
It is cruel. But this type of cruety is going on in for decades together. Better counsel should prevail among the Hindus to put an end to such cruel practices.
We have activists like Ms. Maneka Gandhi protecting stray dogs. Is it not a pity that no one comes forward to protect innocent and ignorant human beings?
Can someone initiate legal action against the Govt. of TN for not stopping such inhuman pracices?
We need super star Rajinikanth to look into this matter seriously. I remember the role he played in Chandramukhi. If we can screen this movie free for all the ladies undergoing the whipping, then they will see the difference. In Tamil Nadu more than education and politics, the impact of Tamil films is very strong.
I cannot believe how such superstition exists in India, even though it has been a facet of global power. These customs and mores seem to be ineradicable. This shows that more people from villages need to be enlightened.
Shame in India!
I will use this article to publish a paper here in USA about the barbaric act. How can a reformer CM tolerate this kind of nonsense?
I wish I was there. I would have shown that priest what an evil spirit is.
I am shocked to see you people getting shocked. Myriad of such events happen throughout our country. If you are coming accross such an event for the first time, I would say that you really don't know about the cultural diversity of our country. We can say that it is barbaric and we all know that it is. But we have to keep in mind that it is their belief. You CAN'T ask for a reason for someone's. And yes, police are bystanders and they are meant to be bystanders there till someone interrupts the 'ritual'. Such events are identity to our rural india.
We people are good at giving ideas. I didn't see anyone comment saying they are going to take some steps in eradicating such acts. If someone had said it, I would have saluted him. I feel that all the discussion is void of good ideas. Because, talking alone is good for nothing. Someone needs to act. I pledge I will be one among them.
I think I read something about a possible petition or some such thing so that as responsible people we can take up concerns regarding such practices. Any ideas about how to go about it and whom we should address it to? I think it is not a bad idea to address it to the PM of India.
I read in the article that a schoolgirl was sent to this ritual by her parents just because she wasn't concentrating on her studies. Many school going boys also cannot concentrate on studies. Why aren't they sent to such a place to get rid of their evil spirits? A Woman can never be "possessed" who gives birth to new life & nurtures same.Rather I would say men organizing & watching such rituals are "possessed" with cruelty & brutality in their minds and they should be lashed. This is a clear indication of male chauvinism & dominance against women since ages. Till such inhuman incidences against women happen we cannot say that today men & women are at par!
Impulsive comments - good, the reporter must also find how many communities really participate in such ritual and how many communities promote and get involved in this type of rituals--otherwise this is another attention seeking rather than real reportage.
This only goes to show how different strata of Indian society live in a different and far distant time
Good that we all stand united, abhorring this modern day brutality. The irony is that all this is being carried out in the name of one's religion and faith which, if rightly followed, will give us total peace. Are we all willing to rethink and break away from the bonds of the superstitions we so subconsciously follow culminating in such dastardly acts? If yes, that could be the first step of our personal action in condemning this.
So what is the difference between the Taliban
whipping and this priest? None.
It is obvious that India is not a civilized country. It would no be easy to imagine a more cruel act. The stupidity of governments at all levels is exhibited. The policemen watching must be sadists.
