New Rajasthan Governor assumes office

April 28, 2010 07:46 pm | Updated 07:46 pm IST - JAIPUR:

Punjab Governor Shivraj Vishwanath Patil on Wednesday took oath as the Governor of Rajasthan in a brief function held at Raj Bhawan here. The Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court, Justice Jagdish Bhalla, administered the oath of office to Mr. Patil at the Banquet Hall after Chief Secretary T. Srinivasan read out the order of the President of India on the appointment of Mr. Patil.

Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, members of the State Cabinet, the Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the State Assembly, Ghanshyam Tiwari, former Rajasthan Governor Anshuman Singh, City Mayor Jyoti Khandelwal and senior bureaucrats were present on the occasion. Mr. Patil, who arrived in the Rajasthan capital in the morning, was accompanied by his son, Shailesh Patil.

Prior to the oath, a two-minute silence was observed as a mark of respect to former Governor Prabha Rau, who passed away in Delhi on Monday. After the function held without any frills and even the customary tea--due to the seven day official mourning in the State-- Mr. Patil interacted with Mr. Gehlot and other guests.
