35 colleges in Karnataka face closure threat

Within days of the Union Government’s affidavit on derecognition of 44 deemed-to-be universities, the State Government too is getting set to crack the whip on “unauthorised” educational institutions.

No less than 35 colleges, including six that function with foreign collaboration, will face closure orders in the near future, Higher Education Minister Arvind Limbavali told presspersons here on Friday.

A Government Order that authorises the Commissioner of Collegiate Education to inspect records, registers and documents at these institutes, and conduct detailed inspections was issued on Thursday.

The Government, in its order, has clarified that these institutes were found to be operating without the State Government’s sanction and requisite approval from the University Grants Commission, All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) or Distant Education Council.

The said list includes some prominent colleges, a majority of which are located in Bangalore and are also known to be conducting similar courses across the country. ICFAI Institute of Science and Technology, Sikkim Manipal University, Amity Global Business School, TASMAC, Bangalore Institute of Aeronautical Engineering, Indian Business Academy and M.S. Ramaiah School of Advanced Studies are among the “blacklisted” colleges.

The Minister said that only three colleges had replied to the Government’s show-cause notices.

“So now it is time for them to face consequences.” He was non-committal on the fate of students studying in these institutions and said further decisions regarding the students will be taken after detailed inquiry.
