It's that time of the year when The Shakti Foundation brings together a galaxy of musicians for a show to raise funds for several welfare projects undertaken by it.

Called “Sampranita”, which in Sanskrit means “brought together,” the show on February 27, (6.30 p.m.) at The Music Academy will feature Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, U. Shrinivas, V. Praveen, Vijay Ghate and Selvaganesh. With the flute, mandolin, mridangam, tabla and kanjeera maestros playing in tandem, music lovers can prepare themselves for an evening of riveting ragas and rhythms.

Dedicated to its founder Velan Raghuvir, the show is in aid of medicare for the Melmaruvathur Adhiparasakthi Institute of Medical Sciences and Research.

Since its inception in 1991, The Shakti Foundation has been working relentlessly towards creating a barrier-free environment for the physically challenged. The foundation has also been working for the implementation of The Persons With Disabilities Act. Over the years, it has become a helpline for the physically challenged and acted as a catalyst in rehabilitating hundreds of special children housed in 15 special schools in the city. Rehabilitation aids, medical support, education stipends and food are provided to these children through the helpline.

Integrating the physically challenged into the social mainstream has been one of the foundation's main objectives. It has been working closely with various departments of the State government on the issue of access for those with special needs. Thanks to its efforts, ramps can now be seen in several public places such as airports, railway stations and shopping malls. Carnivals and sports events are organised to give them a sense of belonging.

Sampranita comes quick on the heels of Shakti's “Jai Ho”, a fundraiser featuring music wiz A. R. Rahman. “This is the tenth year that mandolin exponent U. Shrinivas will be playing for us,” says Vasanth Raghuvir of Shakti Foundation. “With such a line-up of artistes, you can expect magic on the stage,” she adds.

MUSIC, THE HEALER

Nothing can be more fulfilling than playing for such a cause. It is only through such concerts that musicians like me can make a difference to the lives of the underprivileged and special children. After all, music is the best healer. Besides, it's a nice feeling to perform for the discerning Chennai rasikas. - Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia

MEANINGFUL MUSIC

I feel blessed that every year I get to perform at the Shakti Foundation fund-raiser. Music is the best way to understand the needs and emotions of special children. This year, I look forward to sharing the stage with the legendary Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia. I have performed with him earlier, yet excited about the musical exchange - U. Shrinivas

TWIN TREAT

This is the first Time I am part of the Shakti Foundation concert. It's a twin treat since I will perform alongside Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia and for a noble cause. I have been playing the mridangam for more than four decades and performed with mandolin U. Shrinivas for almost 22 years. Shows such as Sampranita provide a fascinating experience to artists and offer a medley of sounds to the audience. - Bangalore V. Praveen
