What's on - Chennai annual music and dance festival

With the onset of December, sabhas in the city gear up for the annual music and dance festival. Here's a round-up of the events in the coming month…

Mudhra

Mudhra celebrates its 15th Fine Arts Festival from December 9, 2009 to January 10, 2010, at Infosys Hall, Ramakrishna Mission School, T. Nagar. The sabha will confer the ‘Mudhra Award of Excellence' on veteran mridangam vidwan Prof. Tiruchi Sankaran on the occasion. The month-long festival includes harikatha, namasankritanam, jugalbandi, six-violin concert, RTP concert, four-hour concert, lecdem, quiz programme and music appreciation programme.

For the first time, the sabha conducts a unique ‘Sthree Tyagaraja Pancharatnam – Sruthi 5,' by a group of women and screens interesting documentaries on all days. For more details call Mudhra Bhaskar 98400 72821.

Nadhadweepam Trust, ‘Mantralayam Raghavendra Nivas,' 85A, Ramapuram, Rayar Thoppu, Srirangam, Tiruchi, will observe GNB centenary and honour Maharajapuram Srinivasan, Nagai Muralidharan, Thanjavur Kumar and Srirangam Kannan on the occasion.

The musicians will be conferred the ‘Nada Vidya Bhupathi' title and a purse on December 3, 6 p.m. during the Trust's music festival to be held from December 2 to 5 at NSTSS, 15 {+t} {+h} Street, Nanganallur. Guru Kasi Viswanathar presents the awards and N.V. Subramaniam presides over.

Dance drama

Sheela Unnikrishnan's Sridevi Nrithyalaya, The Majestic City, D-2, 21, L.V. Prasad Road, Vadapalani, (Ph: 2366 4838), launches their new production, ‘Janani Jagath Karani,' a Bharatanatyam dance drama to be held during the December festival.

The following is the list of venues where the new production will be staged.

Janani Jagath Karani : At Bharat Kalachar, Dec. 1, 7.15 p.m.; at Ramarao Kala Mantap, Dec. 4, 6.30 p.m.; at Mylapore Fine Arts, Dec. 9, 7.15 p.m. and at Thyaga Brahma Gana Sabha, January 2, 6.30 p.m.

The following is the list of solo performances to be held during the festival.

Bhairavi Venkatesan (Jan. 6, 5.30 p.m., at Mylapore Fine Arts); Archana Raja (January 12, 6.30 p.m., at Vani Mahal), Harinie Jeevitha (Jan. 14, 6.30 p.m., Vani Mahal) and Simran (Jan. 15, 5.30 p.m. at Mylapore Fine Arts).

Tarangam fest

The Trustees of Thirupoonthuruthy Sri Narayana Tirtha Swamigal Trust, R.A. Puram (Ph: 2493 6671), will inaugurate the 13 {+t} {+h} mini music festival of Namasankirtana Tarangams of Narayana Tirtha on December 11 at Sringeri Pravachan Mandiram, Sringeri Mutt Road, R.A. Puram.

Veda parayanam by Madurai Mani Sastrigal at 3.30 p.m. followed by chanting of Vishnu Sahasranamam by All India Vishnu Sahasranama Cultural Federation at 4.15 p.m. will precede the inaugural function.

Veteran musician M. Balamuralikrishna will inaugurate the festival. H.S. Ramani, IAS (Retd.), former chief secretary, Government of Rajasthan, will be the guest of honour.

Dr. D. Ramakrishna, Vijayawada will render a talk on ‘Advaita Philosophy of Sri Narayan Tirtha.'

Kalarasana

Kalarasana's 27th music festival will begin from December 12 and go on till January 3, 2010 at Rani Seethai Hall, Anna Salai. The Tamizh Isai Vizha will be on from December 17 to January 3, 2010. Season tickets priced at Rs. 4,000, Rs. 3,000 and Rs. 1,000 are available at Rani Seethai Hall from December 1, between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Also available are daily tickets for Rs. 500, Rs. 300, Rs. 200 and Rs. 100.For details, call 24939539 or 93809 61671.

Kala Kruthi

Vidushi R. Vedavalli will inaugurate the annual music festival of Kala Kruthi on December 5, 6.30 p.m., at Sankaralayam, 63, Mayor Ramanathan Road (Spurtank Road), Chetpet. The welcome address will be by Shanthi Raghavan. Amritha Murali will open the festival with a concert. The festival concludes on December 10. For details, call 28190154.

Naadhabrahmam

The eighth art festival of Naadhabrahmam will begins on December 2 at the Dakshinamurthi Auditorium, P.S.High School, Mylapore.

At 6 p.m. T.R.Pachamuthu, Chancellor, S R M University, will preside and confer the titles ‘Naada Kovida' on T.V.Sankaranarayanan, ‘Nrithya Kovida' on Padma Subrahmanyam, ‘Naada Sevika' on S. Sowmya and ‘Nrithya Sevika' on Pavithra Srinivasan. Felicitations will be offered by R. Krishnamoorthy, Member-CERC, and V.P. Dhananjayan.

This will be followed by a Bharatanatyam recital by Madhavi Chandran. For further details contact: 9381043396.

Nalinakanti Fine Arts

Nalinakanti Fine Arts and the Department of Natya, MGR Janaki College present the eighth Nalinotsavam from December 4 to 9, at Dr. MGR Janaki College, Durgabai Deshmukh Road, R. A. Puram. Most concerts will begin at 6.30 p.m. For more information, call 24456043.
